Adoption is Love, Welcome to the Family Elsa

Adoption is such a beautiful, sweet example of love at its finest.
Think about it.
You find someone you don't really know but who needs a place in this world, and  you say

"You are ours."
"You are part of us and always will be."
"We claim you for good, and we will care for you, cherish you, teach you,
provide for you, make our hearts one with your heart, give ourselves up for you and bless you."

And why not?

Doesn't God Himself, when we accept His love and forgiveness through Christ,
 ADOPT us as sons?
(He does.)
If you don't believe me read Romans 8:15 and Ephesians 1:5.

Heady stuff!

Adoption is an amazing thing, and we are so grateful
to have gotten to see it close up in its earthly form twice.

In December, over the Christmas Holiday,
the Lindquist family gathered once more at the Minneapolis airport baggage claim (right by the Starbucks)
to welcome another new family member by adoption--
2 year old Elsa from China--through my
husband's older brother Todd and  his wife Kirstin.
She joins Annika (four), Jake (14), Gus (17) and Mari (19).

As you scroll through the pictures, I hope you can sense the excitement and anticipation we felt.
Elsa, if you ever read this,
I hope you will see and know how much we loved you already.

(By the way, if you happen to see somebody looking crabby, well, they weren't one of us!
They were the poor souls who had to navigate around all of us.)

Nana and Papa waiting, camera in hand!

Zach and Nana...and me in the background wondering how my baby ever got so big!

Andrew (standing next to family friend):  "Hey...we made it here in time...let the party begin..."

Looking towards the escalators:
"I'm here now..........."
Patience is not a naturally occurring trait in our family.

Papa:"So!  Do  you think Elsa will waterski this summer?"
Zach:  "She's two years old Papa!............Yeah..probably!"

Ava on the left and Lily on the right...waiting....

Ava and another newly adopted friend Ellie who is four years old...still waiting....

And suddenly...through the glass....THERE THEY WERE!
(At this point I might mention that Todd and Kirstin took the whole "fam" with them to China for the adoption!)

Here's where it all gets surreal!
"Helloooooooo!"

"Heyyyyyyyyy!"

Those are Andrew's hands on the right...I think a big hug is coming my niece Mari's (Wheaton shirt) way!
Better scoot Lily!

And this is my favorite picture right here.
Yep...There's the "big welcome hug in the background,
and in the foreground, there is Kirstin and her mother
sharing the first moment of this new reality.

I like how they are looking at each other and saying a thousand things without a word!

Introductions.

And now Kirstin is saying "How much snow is out there?"
Just kidding...we've had no snow this year.

Me with the proud father!

And Andrew's still giving out hugs.
It was a hugging sort of day!

Katie and new big sister Annika
most likely rejoicing in the favorable shift
of feminine balance of power in the family.
Let the "Age of Shopping with Manicures" begin!

Just a few of the "Welcome Elsa Gang"

We love you Elsa!

We are so grateful that God chose you to be a Lindquist!

A Pool of Cousins in the Morning

After Grandpa Louie's 70th Birthday Party....we spent the night in Springfield.  The next morning consisted of a quick dip in the pool.  Because what's a day and a half vacation without a dip in a pool???
There had to be a dip or it would be disqualified from vacation status!

The chlorine was palpable.  You could chew it! If it didn't choke you first!

All the kids were pretty comfortable in the water, which made for a nice time to chat for the adults...

The "almost adults" amused themselves as well.  Katie?

That there is a pool full of Curry's!  Quite a gene POOL!
Sorry.  Couldn't help myself.

The Two Amigos!
Can somebody please move Tennessee a wee bit closer to Minnesota?
Anyone?

Beards all around!

And a two headed monster in the cold air-conditioned hall!
Tim is thinking,"This is very damp....and cold...cold and damp"
But worth it....

Stay tuned for that afternoon's rivetting entertainment!

Celebrating 90!

My Grandpa Louie turned 90 in September, and the whole family gathered, along with friends, to celebrate.
Here's Grandpa about to tell a story.
I don't remember what the story was, but I'm sure it was a good one.  They're all good ones by the time you get to be 90!

We made it easy on him, of course, with the "90" candles.
Still....don't you wonder what ninety individual candles would look like?  My kids would have been happy to undertake the lighting process.  I just can't quite remember whether the small town where he lives has a fire station.  You would want a fire station nearby if my kids were in charge of lighting 90 candles!
Of course, there was that one wedding....
oh my, that's another story....

My sister Alyse is wondering just how many glasses of banana punch Tim has had!  (We don't make it with anything stronger than sugar...but let me tell you...there's a lot of that in there!  You have to heat the stuff up just to get it to absorb all the sugar!)
We were pretty pumped up...or hyped up...having been in Minnesota for the boys' first varsity football game the night before and then having gotten up predawn in order to get to the 90th birthday party.  But we knew it would be worth it, and it was!

Here's my sweet little neice Adeline, with Grandpa's flower garden in the background.  So sweet....so calm....

Oh...and here's my child....

This is not a blood transfusion at the kitchen table!!!
Although I'm sure by the time we all left he could have used one!
Lily packed the red pail you see in front of Grandpa with an assortment of gifts--one of which was a tattoo, being lovingly administered here by my lovely aunt.

"Does he like it?  Does he like it?"

"You do like tattoos don't  you Great-Grandpa?
It was just a little bit important to her.
He knew.
I don't know if he's always known when things were important to little ones, but I have a sneaky feeling he has.

I know this because of Timmy.  It's genetic you see.

Unfortunately, the tattoo was unsuccessful.
But that just made the "silly band" all that much more important!

I wonder how many men in their 9th decade wear silly bands.
One at least.  Now.
At least until we left.

Lily and Ally:  "Oh yeah...we scored!  That silly band looks GREAT on him!"

A Red Lobster card and jellies from just about everyone just to round things out.  You see before you a patient man....and a much loved one as well.  Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Happy Birthday All!

During my recent blogging hiatus, we, the Lindquist family, have had a few birthdays!

First, in March was Katie's 14th!!!!
We had a couple of parties for her...three to be exact, so if the pictures don't seem to all be of the same event, it is because they aren't!
Lots of candles on that cake...spread out widely...but she got them all!
Way to go Katie!

But here at our immediate family celebration...

...a different story....

She  thought this was very funny.
I don't ask questions anymore.
I just go cut cake.

Saving the candle that wouldn't blow out.
It's good to know he's out there somewhere, I guess...even if she hasn't met him yet!

Then, Lily turned FIVE in April!

The Home Party....

The Private Cousin Party...

And...drumroll PLEASE>>>>>
the midnight creation of...

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE!!!

Oh yeah.

THEN!

ANDREW AND TIMMY turned 17 and 11!!!!
Twinsies we call them!
Or Swedish Twins...
I just made that up.

The kids sat outside...

..they were a little squirrly...

Oh please, Aunt Suzanne, don't ever make us sit with the big kids again!
We're afraid.

Well, there was no room inside with us, that's for sure!
We had the Beck family with us and Alyse!
It was a PARTY!

The Cake...for posterity...

My boys.  Happy Birthday boys!

Now you need to know...
that in the Lindquist family...
 after each and every present...
everyone even loosely associated with the giving of that present...
gets a hug and a kiss.
You cannot escape.
It is not optional.
It happens.

In fact....
We just all kiss.
Why not?

Hugs and Kisses all around!!!
They aren't Lindquists.
They are normal.
From Europe.
But normal.

We are just a touchy feely sort of family...

I was just sayin'....

The Dude...

and

the Man.

"Man Up" now gets said at least 25 times a day in these parts.
It's a very useful phrase.
Lily doesn't want to finish her Cookie Crisp?  Man UP!
Timmy can't find his private protective gear for LaCrosse because Molly chewed it?  Man UP!
Too tired to vacuum?.....See what I mean!?

He's thinking of all the times he's going to use the "Man Up" phrase.

They're just thinking we're strange.

And truthfully....

.....we are.
